Complex Orthodontic Treatment

Every smile has its own needs. Some patients have a bite problem involving the jaws, teeth that have shifted because of periodontal disease, or an alignment issue that calls for specialized appliances. At Lawrenceville Orthodontists, we look at the complete picture and develop a treatment plan based on your age, oral health, and goals.

When Jaw Surgery and Orthodontics Work Together

Braces and aligners move teeth, but they cannot correct every difference in jaw position. When the jaws themselves are significantly out of alignment, orthognathic surgery may be considered once skeletal growth is complete. Orthodontic treatment and surgery are planned together to improve the way the teeth fit and the jaws function. For some patients, treatment can also improve facial balance.

The American Association of Orthodontists offers an overview of surgical orthodontics. Our Complex Treatments Smile Gallery shows examples of different approaches used for challenging cases.

Treating Teeth Affected by Periodontal Disease

Gum disease can affect the bone supporting the teeth and may lead to looseness or changes in tooth position. Before moving teeth affected by periodontal disease, we consider their supporting bone and coordinate with the patient’s general dentist or periodontist.

For an appropriate patient, orthodontic alignment may be followed by a retainer bonded behind the teeth to help maintain their position and provide stability. The retainer is only one part of the plan. Regular cleanings, thorough daily care, and recommended periodontal treatment remain essential to managing gum disease over time.

More Options for Challenging Bites

Some significant bite problems can be treated without jaw surgery. A growing patient may benefit from a Herbst appliance or rapid palatal expander. In other cases, we may use temporary anchorage devices (TADs) to help guide tooth movement. Headgear, elastics, and removable appliances can also help us reach the planned result when they are worn as directed. Learn more about how braces move teeth on our Dental Braces page.

Your participation matters throughout treatment, from caring for your teeth and appliances to wearing your retainer afterward. “Good patients get good results!”
